Between the Italian railway stations of recent construction, S. Maria Novel is one of greater for the complexes architectonic relief.
The first building, "Leopolda", date back on 1844, projected from Robert Stephenson (son of the inventor of railway). Four years later the second station was realized, "maria Antonia", that was placed inside the city walls. Of the two railway stations, however, some trace does not remain today: Antonia Maria was entirely demolished in order to make the space for the current structure.
In 1932, in fact, the national competition for the new Railway station was banished, wined from the Tuscany Group direct by the architect Giovanni Michelucci and composed from Baroni, Berardi, Gamberini, Guarnieri, Lusanna.

The new station was inaugurated in 30 October 1935. The great entrance hall, covered from one "glass waterfall", introduce in the head gallery that cosses the interely complex.
The outer covers takes out the materials and the colors of the city again, establishing one feeling of continuity with the surrounding city context. Inside we find value art works, like the sculptures of Italo Griselli and paintings of Ottone Rosai and Mario Romoli.
The complex, that overlook to the church of S. Maria Novella, is a masterpiece of the rationalism and one of the best expressions of modern Italian architecture.
